driving

What could be scarier than teaching your baby how to drive? Oh, raising teenagers is filled with such ups and downs. Sarah has been completely hesitant about driving. She begged us to just put any money we would spend on a used car towards an upgrade on her cello. "Well how do you think you and your upgraded cello will get to your lesson?" I ask. "You'll drive me of course :)" she replies. Wrong answer sweetheart. I need you to drive yourself to all the wonderful things you do. Plus a few siblings now and then! So we take her out kicking and screaming a few times a week. She always comes back happy and a little more secure in her new found ability. So back to my original question. The only thing scarier I can think of is letting your sweet baby girl get picked up to go on a date by some 16 or 17 year old boy and watching them drive away. Thankfully I have about 8 months to get use to that idea. Heaven help us all!

I didn't even recognize Sarah at first in the picture. What a cutie! Spencer doesn't want to drive either!!! What is that?

Silly Sarah! How could she NOT want to drive? Maybe we should plan a girls' trip to Southern Utah to give her some practice?

Claudia,
Grampa Nielson is anxious to give Sarah a chance to drive his motorcycle. He thinks she would be a natural!!! Tell her it is no big deal. If it tips over it is only 900 lbs. He is sure she could pick it up with one hand. Tell her to drive over anytime if she wants to take the bike for a spin. Written by Grampa, David

i don't understand the reticence. of course i looked upon driving as my personal ticket to freedom. i got my license the first possible day i could. what a rush that first solo drive was! it was so exhilarating!!

i have a sibling who just didn't seem to care though. she finally got her license when she finished college. it boggled my mind! but i fear for the early years of driving. i know that it just takes time to build up your "driving muscles" and develop that sixth sense of awareness and skill. so many accidents happen in the early years as they gain experience. for that reason alone i'm not really looking forward to my kids getting behind the wheel. luckily i have a few more years till i have to worry!
